Mother's Day

Well, another Mother's Day rolls around ... my Mom passed away on Mother's Day, 2000. This is a photo of my lovely Mom in high school. I know she didn't have a very easy time growing up - her family lived in the poor section of St. Louis and she would tell of snowy mornings when she would walk to grammar school, and could feel the frozen pavement on her feet - as her shoes had worn through. What can I say? She loved music, singing, played the piano and the harp like an angel, loved flowers and gardening, and just taking a walk around the block. In the end she had to suffer horribly with lung cancer. I don't think I'll ever be able to come to a peaceful conclusion why good people (and even the not so good) have to suffer with such cruel intensity. It's one of those thoughts I feel better if I avoid, but then - alas, it creeps up on me and pokes its ugly head through the door, and knocks me flat on my ass again. Fortunately, her suffering is over - and she left her children and grandchildren, and those who were blessed to know her - with such a sense of grace and joy, and knowing someone who celebrated a life well-lived. Love you Mom - Happy Mother's Day!

Ah, bittersweet memories. I feel that. My mom grew up during the Depression and suffered an agonizing cancer fate too young, yet she left many good and positive things as her legacy. Happy Mother's Day, Peggi.

What a touching post Peggi--your mother was so beautiful inside and out. I would have loved to hear her play the harp.

Happy Mother's Day to you!

I just wanted to add one more thing - I love the photo of your Mom, so young and pretty and hopeful. A bobbysoxer from the look of her. Taken about 1945? I can almost hear the screen door banging her as she runs out on her way to school in her saddle shoes and angora sweater with her books held stiff against her breast by her Peechee folder - the whole world looks so bright and inviting. And the war's just over and the soldiers are coming home and the world's going to be normal again...

Did I guess right?

You are a very wise pig, my pondering friend...this was her senior photo from high school, and it wasn't too long after she graduated that she met my Dad. This was probably taken in 1942-43 - but I think you've certainly pinned down the facts about her hopes and dreams, and her beauty too. I loved your wonderful comment - thank you! And Happy Father's Day to you, sir =)
